Why is Racial Harmony important in Singapore?

Singapore is well known for being a multi racial country which make up of four main races - the Chineses, Malays, Indians and Eurasians. Racial Harmony should not be taken for granted as it had not been an easy route for Singapore to be what it is today. Racial Harmony plays an important role in Singapore. Can you imagine how life will be like if there is no racial harmony?

Racial Harmony is important in maintaining peace and harmony in Singapore. The different races can learn to understand each other's cultures and ways of life. This will allow the minority races to not feel neglected in the society and know that are as important as any other individual. The different races should try to tolerate each other and forgive each other's shortcomings. Race riots might occur if there is misunderstandings between races. This would cause injuries and deaths which will make Singapore an unstable country. This can be seen in the case of Maria Hertogh riot due to inapproriate handling of the case. The Eurasians were being targeted and this left 18 people dead and 173 others injured. Another case of race riot was on 21st July 1964 on the Prophet Mohammed's birthday. The growing racial tensions caused the celebrations to turn into a race riot. To restore order, an island-wide curfew was imposed until 2nd August 1964. This shows how vulnerable Singapore can be and it is important to promote racial harmony so that such race riots would not occur again.

Racial Harmony is also important as it indirectly affects Singapore's economy. Other countries would more likely to invest in Singapore if it is safe and peaceful as they need not worry about losing the money they have invested. Without Racial Harmony, there would be constant riots which will destruct the peace in Singapore. Other countries would lose their confidence in Singapore and not want to invest which lead to lower revenues earned. The economy would deteriote and this would in turn affect the employment rate in Singapore. More people would be unemployed and thus would have a lower standard of life.

Therefore, Racial Harmony is important. Singapore is vulnerable to racial riots thus everyone has to play a part to maintain racial harmony. We should not take for granted the peace we hace now but instead treasure it. What we have today is achieved through mutual understanding and trust between the races that have been built up over the years.
